Footnotes

  • A related kneehole desk or dressing table recorded in the Percival D. Griffith's collection, is illustrated in R. W. Symonds, English Furniture from Charles II to George II, 1929, p. 77, fig. 60. However the Griffiths example has a fixed central cubpoard in contrast to the rarer sliding equivalent on the present lot. A further rare feature is the sunburst inlay to the top of the cupboard door. This is of a type more commonly found on double chests of drawers fitted with secretaire drawers (see Adam Bowett, Early Georgian Furniture, 1715-1740, 2009, pp. 118-119, pls. 3:46 and 3:47.
