A mid 18th century Chinese padouk bureau
The rectangular top above a sloping fall with reading rest, enclosing a central cupboard door flanked by ring turned pilasters with floral carved capitals, six pigeonholes and six short and on long drawer; above three long undulating drawers on bracket feet, with paktong handles and escutcheons, 98cm wide, 53cm deep, 100cm high (38.5" wide, 20.5" deep, 39" high).

  • The above lot relates to a group of furniture known to have been manufactured in Canton and exported through the British and Dutch East India Companies. See C.L.Crossman, The China Trade, p.220-221, a similar bureau bookcase can be seen in colour plate 77 and a very similar bureau is illustrated on the frontispiece, both in padouk and with paktong handles.
