Footnotes

  • The Coalbrookdale Company was founded in 1708, during the mid 19th century cast iron was produced for a huge range of purposes, the contemporary travel writer and historian J.G.Kohl wrote in 1842:

To see how many things are now made in iron in England, one must visit one of the iron warehouses, as for instance that of Coalbrookdale, at this place. Tables, sofas, vases, inkstands, and an endless variety of articles fashioned into the most graceful forms may there be seen.

The Coalbrookdale Company exhibited a magnificent table by John Bell for the Paris International Exhibition of 1855 which was made entirely of cast iron, with four life-size deerhounds supporting a table top decorated with a marbled finish. The table weighed about 16 cwt (812kg) and was commissioned for John Hargreaves of Broad Oak, near Blackburn, Lancashire.
