An Edwardian mahogany lady's fitted folding dressing table
by George Betjemann and Sons, some of the fittings by Walker and Hall, Birmingham
Fitted with a selection of silver, silver and tortoiseshell, ivory and other fittings, the dressing table with a hinged moulded panel top enclosing a folding triptych dressing mirror and above hinged compartments folding-out to either side with various fittings including a hand mirror and four silver and tortoiseshell brushes, hallmarked for Walker and Hall, Birmingham, 1925, a silver cased comb, clippers, ivory handled vanity tools, scissors, nail buffer, the fitted compartment to the rear containing four silver lidded bottles and five pots of various sizes all hallmarked London 1925, flanked to either side by small spring loaded drawers with hidden release mechanism, the front section fitted with a later cream tooled leather surface with a glass protector, all above a central arched kneehole and two short drawers on square section legs and brass castors, with two removable articulated gilt brass lights with frosted shades, which can be fitted above the mirror, with a stylised inset brass trade label for George Betjamenn & Sons to the underside, the fittings partly associated, and the fitted sections adapted and re-lined, the lights with reconditioned and with later shades, 148cm wide, 138cm deep, 67cm high (58in wide, 54in deep, 26in high).

    George Betjemann (1798-1886) was the great grandfather of the Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman (1906-1984). George Betjemann was apprenticed to the dressing case maker Gilbert Slater in 1810 and established himself as a dressing case manufacturer, initially in Clerkenwell and later in the Pentonville Road, where they eventually employed 119 people.

A successful bidder at this sale will be required to pay Bonhams 1793 Limited ("Bonhams") a premium calculated as follows:
25% on the first £100,000 of the hammer price
20% on the excess of £100,001 and up to £2,000,000 of the hammer price
12% on the excess of £2,000,001 of the hammer price

VAT at 20% will be payable on the amount of the premium.

The premium is payable for the services to be provided by Bonhams in the Buyer's Agreement which is contained in the catalogue for this Sale and for the opportunity to bid for the Lot at the Sale.
