Footnotes

  • This characteristic dot and trellis marquetry inspired by the 18th century work of Garnier and Sené is commonly associated with the London firm of Donald Ross, who operated from 13 Denmark Square, Soho during the third quarter of the 19th century and exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851. See C. Payne, Nineteenth Century European Furniture, Suffolk, 1981, p. 315.

For a similar example but without porcelain plaques and attributed to Ross see Bonhams, London, 2 March 2011, lot 198.
