Footnotes

  • A number of 19th century cabinet-making firms such as Gillows, Edwards & Roberts, Jackson & Graham and Wright & Mansfield produced furniture in the 'Sheraton' and 'Hepplewhite' styles. However the Cabinet-Maker noted in 1886 that Wright and Mansfield 'must be accounted the leaders of that pleasing fashion which has happily brought back into our houses many of the charming shapes of the renowned eighteenth century cabinet-makers.' The South Kensington Museum purchased a pair of painted Sheraton style painted satinwood armchairs with related floral decoration, from the sale of Wright & Mansfield's business following the cessation of the partnership in 1886 (see Frances Collard, Regency Furniture, 1985, pp. 235 and 237.

A pair of George III satinwood, giltwood and painted side tables in the manner of Thomas Chippendale junior, with very similar decoration to their tops, sold Christie's London,'Exceptional Furniture', 18 June 2008, lot 11. A related design for a table is illustrated in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793, pl. IV appendix. A further comparison can be made with a 19th century table closely following the Christie's examples which bore the inscription 'Jno. Evans Senr. Pinxit. 1790', sold Sotheby's London 'The Charles and Barbara Robertson Collection', 16 December 2002, lot 126.
