Footnotes

  • This combination of richly figured amboyna veneers and moulded carved and gilt detail may be compared to the documented work of Morel and Seddon for George IV at Windsor Castle in the late 1820's, see H. Roberts,For the King's Pleasure, The Furnishing and Decoration of George IV's Apartments at Windsor Castle, 2001, pp.360-363.

Morel and Seddon's partnership was primarily formed to carry out the Windsor Castle commission, Nicholas Morel having been chosen as the furniture maker in charge of re-furnishing the Castle. Morel was in charge of the major artistic decisions and George Seddon III's extensive workshops provided experienced draughtsmen managers and skilled workmen, Seddon himself also running the business side of the project.

The furniture designed for George IV displays the extensive use figured rosewood veneers and satinwood, birch and amboyna, both in the solid and as decorative veneers. Many of the carved elements and mouldings were oil gilded.

For an almost identical table, but with scroll feet attributed to Morel and Seddon, see Sothebys, 6 December 2011, lot 136.
