Footnotes

  • Provenance: Mrs A.E.Gifford gifted to Norwich Castle Museum, Norwich in 1919.

This rare form of display cabinet can be attributed to the work of Gillows of Lancaster. A rosewood centre table with an almost identical base but with marble top is illustrated in E.T.Joy, English Furniture 1800-1851, p.32. The leaf moulded top on that table appears to be identical to a rosewood and brass inlaid library table attributed to Gillows, c.1820-30, see S.Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, plate 309, the moulding pattern occurs on pedestal tables such as one made for Richard Jackson Esq in July 1817, seen in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Book. The massive carved foot also relates to a sideboard table made by the firm for George Wilson of Dallam Tower in 1827, (ibid plate 371).

Robert Gillow IV supplied to Miss Elizabeth Giffard of Nerquis Hall, Flintshire a fascinating specimen wood workbox in 1808 (ibid Vol II, plates 682-687). It is not known whether this Giffard (also spelt Gifford) was related to the Mrs Gifford in Norwich a century later. John Giffard (Elizabeth's husband) also patronised Gillows of Lancaster of London as did their daughter Elizabeth (d.1942) who held an account with the firm.

A table of the same period and attributed to Gillows with castors also stamped 'GH', was sold Bonhams Knightsbridge, 6 July 2010, lot 146.
