in the manner of Coxed and Woster
The upper part with a moulded overhanging cornice above a pair of doors with engraved ornamental hinges, enclosing a fitted interior on twelve various drawers above a pull-out slide, the lower part with two short and three long graduated drawers, on bracket feet with concealed castors, signed 'Harris' twice to the top in pencil and in red chalk, 111cm wide, 52cm deep, 183cm high (43.5" wide, 20" deep, 72" high).

  • With similarities to a George I walnut cabinet on chest in the manner of Coxed and Woster possibly made for Thomas 1st Earl of Pomfret (1690-1753), being part of the original furnishing of Easton Neston, Northamptonshire. (See Sotheby's house sale 17-19 May 2005, lot 225).

    Coxed and Woster of St. Paul's Churchyard are known for combining high quality burr veneers with elaborately chased mounts. A secretaire in burr maple with pewter stringing is illustrated in G.Beard & J.Goodison, English Furniture, 1500-1840, 1987, p.70, pl.1. Similar hinges can be found on Coxed & Woster bureau cabinets illustrated in C.Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, p.p156-158.
