Footnotes

  • Provenance: possibly supplied to the Temple family at Stowe.

The crest painted to the backs of these chairs is that of the Temple family, the senior branch of which comprised the family of Temple, Dukes of Buckingham, who resided at Stowe House, now Stowe School, in Buckinghamshire. By 1845, the second Duke had accrued debts in excess of £1.4 million and in 1848 the contents of Stowe House were sold by Christie's in a sale that stretched from 15th August to 7th October and came to be known as 'the Sale of the Century'. Listed amongst the lots sold in the Stucco Passage, on the 32nd day of the sale (Wednesday 27th September) were 'Four mahogany hall chairs' (Lot 2329) and 'Four ditto' (Lot 2330), selling at 17s 6d and 17s 0d respectively.
