Footnotes

  • This form of stylised knop handle and the idea of the body of the cellaret being raised on a waisted plinth are both features of the cellaret by George Bullock that was supplied in 1817 to Matthew Robinson Boulton of Great Tew Park, Oxfordshire. The Great Tew cellaret was invoiced at £23 10s and it is possible that Boulton himself helped in the design as in 1816 Bullock thanks him for 'the drawing of the Wine Cooler'. The Great Tew celleret was sold Christie's contents sale, 27 May 1987, lot 55. Other variants on this pattern include one sold Christie's London, 29 November 2001, lot 22 and another sold Christie's London, 9 July 1998.
