The rectangular moulded edge top inlaid with a border of running scrolling foliage and sprays of stylised flora, above a frieze drawer, on turned double column supports each with two additional turned spindles joined by a reeded and turned stretcher on short downswept legs and scrolling brass cappings and castors, 87cm wide, 61cm deep, 74cm high (34" wide, 24" deep, 29" high).

  • The above lot relates to a sofa table in brown oak and holy with the same marquetry pattern border that was supplied by George Bullock to Matthew Robinson Boulton (d.1842) for Great Tew, Oxfordshire in 1817 and sold Christie's contents sale, 27-29 May 1987, lot 34 and again at Christie's London, 27 November 2003, lot 170. The scroll cappings of this pattern appear on Mrs Robert Ferguson's sofa table of 1817 which is illustrated in C.Wainwright et al., George Bullock Cabinet-Maker, London 1988, no.22. The border design is amongst those designs traced by 'Mr Wilkinson' and now in the collection of the City Museum, Birmingham and reproduced in C.Wainwright et al., op.cit., fig 41. This design appears again on an oak table supplied to Francis, 6th Duke of Bedford for Endsleigh, Devon circa 1815 and sold Christie's London, Two Ducal Collections, 21 September 2004, lot 860, also on another sofa table offered Christie's London, 21 April 1994, lot 311. The same border appears in oak on an ebony ground on a table from the collection of Lady Serena James and removed from St.Nicholas, Richmond, North Yorkshire and offered Christie's London, 14 June 2001, lot 176.
