Footnotes

  • Whilst the form of the cabinet and decorative scheme have parallels on documented 17th century cabinets, the lacquer on the present lot appears to be prepared with a paper base layer. This has been exposed by some small chips to the decoration. It has been suggested that this technique is typically associated with Japanese export lacquer cabinets produced in the 1830s, although this practice was used at an earlier date (see Oliver Impey and Christian Jörg, Japanese Export Lacquer, 1580-1850, 2005, p. 75).

Two related 'pictorial' cabinets with related border decoration are illustrated in Oliver Impey and Christian Jörg, op. cit., pp. 138-139, pls. 257 and 256. However these are both dated 1640-1690. It is interesting to note that in this comprehensive survey by Impey and Jörg, no other cabinets are recorded which feature the distinctive coconut palm trees and the stylised linear representation of the foreground shown on the pair of doors.
