A pair of George III carved mahogany armchairs
The oval pierced backs with three fluted medallion centred uprights within beaded frames, the outswept overscrolled arms on shaped beaded supports above serpentine padded seats with fluted seat rails, on tapering beaded legs and spade feet, one chair stamped 'F' twice and the other stamped with an indistinct letter

  • A set of chairs of this designed were supplied to Sir John Trevelyan, 4th Baronet for Nettlecombe in Somerset and are illustrated in R.W Symonds, The Antique Collector, Suite of Chairs and Sofas of the 18th Century, June 1958, pp.100-102, fig 7,8 ,9 & 10. Other pairs of chairs of this model have been recorded including a pair offered Sotheby's London, 3 July 2012, lot 142 and another pair at Sotheby's New York, 28 June 1996, lot 281 which were previously with Stair & Company, New York and exhibited at The International Art Treasures Exhibition, Bath, 1973 and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1974/75). A pair of armchairs of a variant design form part of The Temple Newsam Collection and are illustrated in C.Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, Leeds 1978, Vol.1, p.94, fig.83.

    Longer surviving sets of this or closely related patterns included a set of ten chairs sold Sotheby's London, 15 November 1996, lot 54 and a set of eight chairs formerly with Moss Harris Ltd, London illustrated in their Catalogue and Index of Old Furniture and Works of Decorative Art, Vol. III, fig. 336.
