Lot Details
A George III satinwood, tulipwood crossbanded, ebony and marquetry side table
in the manner of Mayhew and Ince
Inlaid with boxwood and ebonised lines, the rectangular moulded top inlaid with central paterae and a running anthemion inlaid border, above three short drawers inlaid sans traverse, the central deep drawer (locked) inlaid with a shaped cartouche, the lower drawer with integral apron and circular paterae to each side, on square tapering legs on later turned feet, with paper label to the underside '1988 £2500', 34cm wide, 28cm deep, 71cm high (13" wide, 11" deep, 27.5" high).

Footnotes

  • The minimalist scheme of inlay on the present table with its combination of contrasting panels of veneer to the legs and distinctive central medallions has affinities with that on a commode attributed to Mayhew and Ince, sold Christie's London, '50 Years of Collecting: The Decorative Arts of Georgian England', 14 May 2003, lot 20. In addition to this the repertoire of ornament features a running anthemion border to the top and pelter motif to the front which are commonly occurring motifs exhibited on furniture associated with the work of this firm (see Lucy Wood, Catalogue of Commodes, 1994, pp. 203-208).
