Footnotes

  • A closely related pen and ink design for an overmantel mirror by John Linnell, dated June 20 1761, preserved in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum V&A E.22 1929, is reproduced in Helena Hayward and Pat Kirkham, William and John Linnell 18th century Cabinet-Makers, 1980, 2 vols., vol. II., p. 61, fig. 123. This pattern includes an urn and floral swag cresting such as was possibly originally present on the offered lot. Another design by Linnell for an overmantel with candle arms, illustrated ibid., p. 61, pl. 121 features a distinctive scroll to its apron which is paralleled in inverted form here.
