Footnotes

  • Provenance: The Hove Club, Hove, East Sussex.

The Hove Club was founded in 1882 and the gentlemen members had a strong military and professional bias. Originally founded as the Hove Reading Room and located in the Willetts building on the North East corner of Grand Avenue. Membership grew and by 1890 the club built their own premises in the heart of Hove.

Identical columns with Ionic capitals and the same stiff leaf border appear on a Regency giltwood and ebonised pier mirror sold Sotheby's London, The Mirror Sale, 8 June 2005, lot 119.
