A large late George III carved giltwood and white painted overmantel mirror
The rectangular plate flanked by fluted columns and ionic capitals and surmounted by a panelled frieze centred by an inset oil on canvas en-grisaille panel of frolicking putti within a star-burst moulded surround, flanked by further panels decorated with tied foliate and berry fronds with a gadroon moulded lotus and acanthus decorated cornice, 257cm high, 175cm wide, (101" high, 68.5" wide).

    The Hove Club was founded in 1882 and the gentlemen members had a strong military and professional bias. Originally founded as the Hove Reading Room and located in the Willetts building on the North East corner of Grand Avenue. Membership grew and by 1890 the club built their own premises in the heart of Hove.

    Identical columns with Ionic capitals and the same stiff leaf border appear on a Regency giltwood and ebonised pier mirror sold Sotheby's London, The Mirror Sale, 8 June 2005, lot 119.
