A George III mahogany secretaire bookcase
attributed to Gillows
Inlaid with boxwood and ebonised lines, the rectangular cavetto moulded cornice above a pair of octagonal astragal glazed doors enclosing three adjustable shelves with a rectangular moulded top and hinged fall front enclosing a slide with a hinged later green tooled leather writing surface, six pigeonholes and four short drawers, above a deep well flanked by six hinged alphabetical inlaid lidded compartments; above a pair of panelled purplewood banded doors enclosing a divided interior, with one shelf, on shaped bracket feet, 125cm wide, 48cm deep, 212cm high (49" wide, 18.5" deep, 83" high).

- The sophisticated secretaire drawer which features on the lot offered here, with the addition alphabetically inlaid drawers and a slide is of the type introduced by the Gillow firm in 1782 replacing their old pattern of secretaire which had been in use since the 1750s.
