Footnotes

  • A group of mid-18th century Irish carved mahogany tables illustrated in The Knight of Glin and James Peil , Irish Furniture, 2007, p. 228, pls. 92 and 94 p. 229, pls. 96 and 97, p. 232, pl. 113 and p. 240, pl. 152, share characteristics featured on the present table such as shell motifs, elaborately scrolled aprons and foliate carving to the legs. In addition to this the carving is on a 'punched' or 'pounced' ground similar to that on early 18th century gilt-gesso work, and also evident on a related Irish table formerly in the Percival Griffiths collection (See Peil and Glin, op. cit., P. 232, pl. 113) sold Christie's London 'Simon Sainsbury The Creation of an English Arcadia', 18 June 2008, lot 45. However two elements in the design of the table here do not appear to be obviously paralleled on any tables securely identified as Irish. These are the gadrooned carving to the perimeter of the top and the presence of claw and ball feet. A possible exception to the latter is a carved mahogany tea table, in the collection of the Winterthur Museum, Delaware, with similar claw and ball feet, previously thought to be American and now possibly considered to be Irish (See Peil and Glin, op. cit., p. 152, pl. 107).
