• Gustave and Christian Herter founded their own furniture and upholstery firm in New York in the late 1850s/ early 1860s, having immigrated from Stuttgart, Germany. Their designs embraced the emerging fashions of the Renaissance Revival, Gothic Revival and the Aesthetic Movement. It is the later for which the firm are best known today. Their reputation and commissions went to the very height of American society, with Presidents Grant and Roosevelt commissioning the firm to furnish the Red and East Rooms of the Whitehouse, respectively.
