PROVENANCE: With The Solomon Gallery, Dublin
John Bellany, a figure head in Scottish art since the 1970s, was celebrated this year through a substantial retrospective held at the National Galleries of Scotland on the occasion of his 70th Birthday. His work, as typified by the current lot, is often allegorical and richly toned, which in subject matter fluctuates between pensive, dark and whimsical. It is these qualities which he shares and clearly admires in the work of the Irish author John Banville, best known for his 2005 novel The Sea.
