Marie Hamonet sat for John during the artist's time in Pléneuf, Brittany (1918-19), before marrying and moving to Paris. John had always been attracted by the sea having spent her childhood in the Welsh coastal towns of Haverfordwest and Tenby. In Pléneuf and other towns at this time John's style can be regarded as spontaneous, linear and fluid. She often worked very quickly but to striking effect, as in the present lot.

We are grateful to Cecily Langdale for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
