The design for this type of dragon and phoenix bowl first developed in the Kangxi reign, and was continued throughout the 18th century and into the late Qing dynasty. A very similar Daoguang mark and period bowl is illustrated by R.Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Gulexuan Collection, Lünen, 2003, no.139. For other examples from the Yongzheng, Jiaqing and Tongzhi reigns in the Nanjing Museum, see Treasures in the Royalty: The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, pp.159, 373 and 437.

A similar pair of bowls, Daoguang seal marks and of the period, was sold at Christie's New York, 26 March 2010, lot 1396.
