Footnotes

  • 十八世紀 白玉雕雙馬擺件

The motif of two horses was popular from the Song Dynasty where they were often depicted biting each other. From the Yuan Dynasty the preference appears to have developed to show the horses resting affectionately on each other, as in the current lot. For a very similar jade, dated to the Yuan/Ming Dynasty, see the catalogue of the Hong Kong Museum of Art exhibition, Chinese Jade Animals, Hong Kong, 1996, no.136. Another small white jade carving of a single horse, dated to the Qing Dynasty, is included in the same exhibition as no.175.
