Ruyi literally translates 'as you wish' and the ruyi was a very popular gift during the reign of Qianlong, symbolising the desire that the recipient's wishes come true. In the present lot, this wish is symbolised in the handles, and combined with the dragon finial, would have been understood as conveying this blessing possibly upon the Emperor.

Compare very similar enamelled ruyi handles set on a cloisonné enamelled censer and cover, mid Qing Dynasty, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated by Zheng Xinmiao, ed., Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels, 3, Cloisonné in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Beijing and Hefei, 2011, pl.232.
