An archaic bronze tripod wine vessel, jue
Late Shang/early Western Zhou Dynasty
Typically cast with three tall plain legs supporting a deeply-hollowed vessel with one sharp pointed end to the rim and the other shallowly hollowed as a spout, cast around the body with two taotie masks divided by vertical flanges on a band of leiwen, the simple loop handle over a single pictogram, the surface with extensive light turquoise shallow encrustation remaining, especially on the upper part. 19.5cm (7½in) high
