Small figural pieces of jade such as the present lot are typical of the playful and personal pieces treasured during the Ming Dynasty, produced from the small jade stones available at the time. It is more rare to find a figure accompanied by a monkey. The Chinese term for monkey 猴 hou is a synonym for marquis 候 hou and the animal is therefore a symbol for high rank, but it can also represent the common desire for longevity, reflecting the ever-popular Monkey King searching for the secrets of immortality in the classic Journey to the West.
