Laozi, traditionally viewed as a historical figure who lived from 604-531 BC, was the founder of Daoism. The present carving shows the famous image of Laozi as an old man riding on an ox, leaving China for the solitude of the distant Western mountains. As he goes through the Hangu Pass, which marked the border of the world of men, the official Yin Xi approaches to ask for his advice; these teachings became the classic book of Daoism, the Daodejing. Such a carving expresses the traditional scholarly yearning for the quiet life of contemplation at the end of a long career.

Compare a boulder with a related scene in the Qing Court collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jadeware (II), Beijing, 2008, pl.51.
