The inscription Chen xin si shui can be translated as:
The official's heart is as pure as water

The shape of this container is highly unusual, and appears to be based originally on a rice-measuring container; compare with a vessel of similar form but made of lacquer, with a Jiajing six-character mark and of the period, in the National Museum of Scotland, ref.A.1930.496. However it has also been considered to be a libation cup; see for example, a more ornate square vessel from the Qianlong period in the Seattle Art Museum, illustrated in Chinese Jades from the Collection of the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, 1989, no.77.
