The form of the present brushpot takes its inspiration from bamboo brushpots which were popular in the 17th/18th centuries, see Chinese Bamboo Carving: Part I, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1978, pl.6. The present brushpot is very ingeniously carved to incorporate the inclusions into the finished design, successfully emulating the natural knotted pine. A similar knotted pine trunk brushpot, but with jade accessories, is illustrated by R.Kleiner, Chinese Jades from the Collection of Simone and Alan Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, no.111.

Compare another related example from the Qing Court Collection, inscribed with an Imperial poem, dated to the mid Qing Dynasty, illustrated in Classics of Forbidden City: Scholar's Paraphernalia, Beijing, 2009, pl.38.
