The vase of lozenge section, crisply incised around the middle with shallow taotie masks across two sides, contrasting with three chilong carved in high relief with swirling bifurcated tails clambering around the top and bottom sections.

    In carving the present jade vase, the craftsmen were inspired by the archaic bronze ritual wine vessel, gu, representing a return to the ancient values advocated by the Qianlong emperor.

    Compare a related green jade gu from the Palace Museum, Beijing, dated to the Qing Dynasty, illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade 10, Beijing and Hefei, 2011, pl.77; see also a white jade gu vase dated to the 18th century, illustrated by R.Kleiner in Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, pl.145.
