Smoothly carved as a rounded cup with a gently flaring rim, raised on a high foot hollowed on the interior, the jade attractively streaked with dark brownish-grey inclusions, wood stand. 15cm (6in) diam. (2).

    The form of this stem cup derives from porcelain: compare a Yongle period stemcup illustrated in the Complete Collection of the Palace Museum: Blue and White Porcelain with Underglazed Red (I), Hong Kong, 2000, no.76. Compare also a similar Ming dynasty jade stem cup from the collection of Captain Dugald Malcolm included in the Oriental Ceramic Society exhibition Chinese Jade throughout the Ages, London, 1975, Catalogue, no.344; and another stem cup dated to the early Ming dynasty from the Gerald Godfrey Collection, Christie's Hong Kong, 30 October 1995, lot 897.
