The present lot is an excellent example of skilled carving complementing the exceptional quality of the pure white stone. The smoothly hollowed sides of the vessel allow the light to reveal the natural lustre of the jade, whilst the intricate wave details on the base and charming chilong are executed with the greatest precision, elegance and liveliness. It is therefore perhaps unsurprising that an inscription was added to reference Zigang, the renowned jade carver of the late Ming Dynasty.

A related yi of similar white jade and elegant form, from the Qing Court Collection, is illustrated in Classics of Forbidden City: Scholar's Paraphernalia, Beijing, 2009, pl.94.
