An inlaid pinewood two-case inro
By Kanshosai Toyo and Takahashi Masatsugu, late 18th/early 19th century
Decorated in mother-of-pearl, shibuichi bronze and shakudo takazogan with assorted shells including sazae (turban shell), hamaguri (clam), awabi (alabone), horagai (conch) and shijimi (corbicula) lying among seaweed, lacquered in gold takamakie, on the polished pine wood ground, signed Matsuho-no-ura no matsu o motte kore o tsukuru, Toyosai (Toyosai made this with pine wood in Matuho-no-ura) and Takahashi Masatsugu and kao within a shibuichi shell; with ensuite, hako-netsuke similarly lacquered, signed in gold lacquer Toyo with kao. 7.5cm (3in) high.
