An unusual lacquered-bamboo inro
By Taikai Tairei (1880-1971), 20th century
Decorated in ishime and gold takamakie with an understated design of fresh, old, broken and insect-eaten bamboo leaves, the design extending over to the reverse, with discreet details inlaid in aogai and kirikane, a tray in the middle section, removable to reveal three integral, fitted, bamboo kobako and covers, each lacquered with plum blossoms; signed in gold lacquer Tairei; with tubular, bone ojime, engraved with a small bird, signed Akimitsu. 7.7cm (3in) high.

    Taikai Tairei studied under Ikeda Taishin (1825-1903), the renowned pupil of Shibata Zeshin and also under Akatsuka Jitoku (1871-1936) to whom his elder sister, Taikai Kei (1877-1946) was married.
