The roiro ground sprinkled with mura-nashiji and lacquered with a continuous evening scene of a keen group of spectators, some of whom hold birds, in the middle sits the handler wearing a visor, with a large wicker basket cage for the birds behind him, all watching the cock fight, shown on the reverse, in gold and iroe-takamakie, with details highlighted in kirikane and e-nashiji, the interior of rich nashiji; signed Nariyuki/Seishi saku with kao. 7.8cm (3in) wide.

    Several examples of this design by Imaizumi Nariyuki/Seishi are known. He is thought to have worked around the early 20th century. Compare with a very similar example by this artist from the Harriet Szechenyi Collection, sold in these rooms, 8th November 2011, lot 341.
