Two wood kiseruzutsu (pipecase)
The first by Masanao of Ise, the second by Meikeisai Hojitsu of Edo, 19th century
The first of boxwood, of otoshi-zutsu type, carved in relief with a cormorant fisherman standing on a rock beneath a pine tree, hauling in his net while a cormorant, the eyes inlaid in dark horn, swims in the swirling water below, signed Masanao, 20.7cm (8 1/8in); the second of ebony, of senryu-zutsu type, carved and partly pierced in the form of a gnarled pine tree, signed Hojitsu, 23.5cm (9¼in).
