A Kakiemon saucer dish
Late 17th century
Painted within the brown-edged foliate rim with a small bird perched on a bamboo stem, another flying past pine and prunus trees above banded hedges in iron-red, green, yellow, blue and black enamels.
22cm (8 5/8in) diam.

    Simon Wingfield Digby, Sherborne Castle, Dorset.

    The third Earl of Bristol had a sister, Anne, who was a close friend of Queen Mary II when she lived in Holland. His family was among the first to support William's accession to the throne and, when he arrived in England in 1688, the new King stayed at Sherborne castle.
