Five kiseruzutsu (pipecase)
19th century
The first of bamboo, with brass hinged cover and base engraved with clouds, carved in low relief with a dragon emerging from swirling clouds, plum blossoms and bamboo, unsigned, 30cm (11¾in); the second of muso-zutsu type, lacquered with simulated basketwork and bamboo leaves of gold takamakie, an inlaid silver snail at the top crawling, signed Shinsai saku, 27.4cm (10¾in); the third of otoshi-zutsu type, of shitan wood, lacquered with a wild cat climbing a creeper-clad tree while birds escape, in gold and coloured takamakie and inlaid aogai, unsigned, 27.3cm (10¾in); the fourth of similar type, of bamboo, inlaid with a large sparrow and bamboo leaves, signed Ikko, 26.4cm (10⅜in); and the fifth of senryu-zutsu, of rustic wood, carved as a gnarled branch, inlaid in copper and shakudo with two flying bats, discreet details in gold and shibuichi, unsigned, 24.8cm (9¾in).
