A Tokyo School bronze figure of a peasant

The old man standing barefoot, bending over from weariness, a scythe used for harvesting the rice held in his right hand behind his back, the other clutching sheaves of rice, two tied stalks of rice straws and bundles of grains lying at his feet, inscribed Kutabire (exhausted) at the side of the base, signed with seal Kaneda chuzo shi ki (cast and certified by Kaneda).

  • 銅置物 草臥 金田兼次郎作 明治時代

    Kaneda Kenjiro, who together with Ishikawa Komei co-founded the Kankokai Craft Company in 1877, later became the adoptive father of the eldest daughter of the renowned lacquerer Shibata Zeshin. Although he is best known for his ivory carvings, he also commissioned figures in bronze, as offered here. He exhibited several works at the Louisiana Purchase Exhibtion in 1904.
