An inlaid black lacquer five-case inro

One side inlaid with five frolicking shishi in gilt, silver, copper and shakudo takazogan, the reverse similarly inlaid with variously-shaped panels engraved with the names of five Goto Masters, the interior of rich gyobu, signed in a copper rectangular reserve Mitsuyoshi with kao; with pale amber bead ojime. 8.3cm (3¼in) high.

Provenance: purchased at Sotheby's London in 1957.
Goto Shinjo (1783-1835), who used the name Mitsuyoshi, was the fifteenth main line Master of the Goto Family.
The artist has respectfully inscribed the names of his ancestors, as an acknowledgement of his celebrated family of metalworkers, renowned for the high quality of their sword fittings. From top to bottom, they read Go(to) Tokujo, Go(to) Eijo, Go(to) Kenjo, Go(to) Teijo and Go(to) Renjo, respectively 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th generations of Goto Masters.
