Emakimono, three painted hand scrolls, in ink and colour on paper, each depicting random scenes of nature and animals, probably made for personal enjoyment or for use as a study manual for his pupils:

The first scroll showing the jyunishi (the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac) comprising:

1) A rat nibbling an acorn
2) A reclining ox shown from behind
3) A prowling tiger
4) A hare standing beside stalks of susuki
5) A dragon enveloped in dark clouds
6) A snake
7) A grazing horse
8) A standing goat
9) A monkey hanging from a tree branch
10) A cock crowing at dawn in front of a fence
11) A puppy nuzzling its mother's haunches
12) A running boar
signed Bunsei kinoto saru fuyu jyunigatsu Hoitsu hitsu (painted by Hoitsu in December in Winter, in the year of the Monkey in Bunsei Period [1824]) with seal Oson, 30.5cm x 747cm (12in x 294 1/8in);

The second scroll comprising:
1) A crow
2) A feather pen and guri-lacquer kogo
3) A pair of scissors lying across stalks of irises
4) A sprig of white oyama renge (magnolia)
5) Trailing vine of yugao (moon flower)
6) A tai (sea bream) lying on top of kumazasa (bamboo leaves)
7) A white lotus flower and leaf
8) A grasshopper crawling over a uri (squash)
9) A sprig of white fuyo (confederate rose).
10) A branch of shukaido (Hardy begonia)
11) A peasant
unsigned, 30.5cm x 607cm (12in x 239in);

The third scroll comprising:
1) Hozuki (Chinese lantern)
2) Kohone (Nuphar japonicum) and an amenbo (water strider) strewn over a stream
3) A lone boatman rowing in mountainous landscape
4) A pheasant
5) A pine tree on a cliff
6) A horned owl
7) Nashi and a vase of flowers
8) A crow
9) A snow-laden branch of pine
signed Bunsei kinoto tori jyunigatsu Hoitsu hitsu (painted by Hoitsu in December, in the year of the Cock in the Bunsei Period [1825]) with seal Oson, 30.5cm x 623cm (12in x 245 ¼in), with wood storage box. (4).
