A traditional lacquered-wood go-ban (games board) set
Edo Period, 18th century
Supported on four baluster feet of dark nashiji, the playing surface of polished wood with black lacquer markings and the sides embellished in gold hiramakie, takamakie and e-nashiji with a flock of stylised cranes flying over sparsely pine-clad islands with the waves gently lapping against the rockwork, with details highlighted in gold kirikane, with two ensuite lacquer goke (bowls) and covers, similarly lacquered, containing white and black goishi (stones), unsigned; with wood storage box. The board 25.2cm x 45cm 40.3cm (9 7/8in x 17¾in x 15¾in), both bowls 9.5cm x 10.5cm (3¾in x 4 1/8in). (6).
