Noji Tamagawa is situated in Omi Province (present day Shiga Prefecture) and is considered to be one of the most beautiful scenic spots of Japan where travellers appreciated the famous views of the flowers of hagi (bush clover), especially during the Autumn season. It was also the subject of many waka poems and the most popular version is by the poet and court officer, Minamoto no Toshiyori (1055-1129), which transcribes:

    あすもこん / 野路の玉川 / 萩こえて / 色なる波に / 月やどりけり

    And reads:

Asumokon / Noji no tamagawa / Hagi koete / Ironaru namini / Tsuki yadorikeri

    And may be translated as:

Through the clusters of bush clover the moon is reflected in the water.
