    From ancient times, the colour red has been considered as one that possesses a certain holy or sacred power. We can also observe from the illustrated handscrolls of the Heian Period, that red lacquerware was also symbolic of a privileged and luxurious lifestyle.

    Due to their relatively large size and sturdy build, Negoro sake utensils, according to Kashiwagi Mari, the curator at the Idemitsu Museum, possessed a purifying power in the red colour and shapes they employed, endowing the gatherings at which they were used with both festive and sacred qualities.
