Nakamura Naohiko graduated from the sculpture department at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He embarked upon a career as a Buddhist sculptor before becoming a mask carver. He also worked as a restorer for the Hosokawa Family.

The demonic mask of Shikami, traditionally used in conjunction with a wig of long, bright red hair, is used to express the violent emotions of the characters found in Noh plays such as Rashomon which tells the story of a demon which lives in Rashomon, one of the gates to Kyoto.
