  • 能面 般若 伝向正運一代作 20世紀

Born in Ishikawa Prefecture, Muko Seiun's original profession was as a Buddhist sculptor. He created Noh masks for the Noh school, Kaga Hosho. A commemorative exhibition of his works along with those of other Busshi, Himi Yosaji (1906-1975) and Kimura Uzan (1891-1977) was organised in 2008, by the Folklore Museum, Kanazawa.

Noh masks have long been an integral part of Japan's religious rituals, festivals and theatre. They represent historical figures and spirits referred to as kami, which have their origins in Japan's indigenous beliefs. Traditionally, the mask symbolised 'possession', transforming the wearer into the kami or its human incarnation.
