An ivory Shibayama-style elephant
Meiji Period
The noble beast standing foursquare on a detachable wood stand carved with lotus leaves, richly caparisoned, bejewelled, with its trunk lowered, the elaborate howdah blanket and harness intricately inlaid in mother-of-pearl, aogai, tortoise-shell and other semi-precious stones, surmounted by a saddle in the form of a lotus on which sits Amidha Buddha, sideways in the meditative position of dhyanasana; unsigned.
23cm x 16cm (9in x 6¼in), the wood stand 5cm x 18.5cm (2in x 7¼in). (2).
