An ivory and Shibayama-inlaid two-leaf tsuitate (table screen)
Attributed to Saito Terukazu/Shoichi, Meiji Period
One side finely carved in low relief with a large eagle perched on a pine branch eyeing its prey shown on the other panel, three other monkeys depicted escaping on the lower panels below, the reverse inlaid in typical Shibayama style, with a continuous design of an old man and a young girl strolling along a river bank beneath flowering cherry blossoms, whilst a bijin feeds two carp swimming above the water, above two smaller panels of densely-clustered peony and chrysanthemum heads, with engraved silvered-metal mounts; signed Terukazu/Shoichi koku. 28cm x 24cm (11in x 9 3/8in).

    Provenance: an English private collection.

    The artist is recorded in the Shoto Museum of Art, Exhibition Catalogue, The History of Ivory Carvings, Tokyo, 1996, as a member of the Tokyo Chokokai (The Tokyo Carvers' Association) between Meiji 39-43 (1906-1910) and as an exhibitor at its 12th competition held in 1897.
