An ivory okimono of a stag
By Sato Kojyu/Mitsutoshi, Meiji Period
Naturalistically carved, standing on all fours and fixed to a circular base, its head slightly raised in an alert manner with the hairwork finely engraved, falling in heavy tresses over its body, its antlers carefully worked to imitate the texture of horn, signed Sato Kojyu/Mitsutoshi with seal Jyu. 18.5cm x 13.7cm (7¼in x 5 3/8in).

    The artist was a member of the Tokyo Chokokai (Tokyo Carvers' Association) in Meiji 39 (1906) and a talented pupil of the distinguished and celebrated carver Ishikawa Komei (1852-1913), one of the founding members of the Chokoku Kyogikai (The Carvers' Foundation Committee) established in 1881. Compare the skill of the hairwork rendered in this stag with that of his teacher, illustrated by The Shoto Museum of Art, The History of Ivory Carvings, Tokyo, 1996, Exhibition Catalogue, p.88.
